hey all yes apparently there was an accident half way through the carnival someone came off the side of one of the floats apparently so I have been told by someone in carnival anyway it was a good night all round was good to see soooo many strange faces in the Hungry Horse {a.k.a Rosewood Inn} before the carnival started wow what a crowd lets hope Burnham carnival is bigger and better next year lets up the stakes a bit shall we?

once again a wonderful night! its a pity that no one had any powers over the weather, but it didnt stop the enjoyment. this is my 3rd visit to the burnham carnival and it wont be the last....
apparently the reason for the delay was that there was an incident where the ambulances were called to somewhere half way along the route and with everything being closed off, it took longer than normal to sort it and it held up the remaiming floats. thats what the paramedic told us who were stood by somerfield when he came back after dealing with it.
my only negative comment about proceedings is that too many marshalls and police tend to stand at the end the route by somerfield and we cant get a good view. i know the floats are huge, but it spoils any photos having a flourescent anorak in front of it all.
roll on next year!!!!!

As visitors who arenow coming to our 18th. Carnival at Wells this year , can I put in my 2 pennyworth. I can understand clubs competing with each other, but surely if one club reaches a standard that is better than the others the aim should be clubs trying to excede that.We have seen clubs come and go ,but one of the thrills is seeing clubs expanding and improving year on year, we are always amazed at the ingenuity behind each cart and the same can be said for the walking entries. This year we have been to see the East Devon Circuit & the Wessex Circuit though both are smaller we enjoyed the time and effort put in by even the smallest of entries.so please enjoy the occasions as participants as much as we enjoy it as spectators, good luck to all, winners and others hoping to see as many of you at Wells

The County Cups have changed sine 2003 and are as follows.
Starkey Championship, Best Overall entry.
Bill Biffen 50th Aniversary Cup, 1st place tableaux.
Midsomer Norton Cup, 1st place feature

I dont know if things have changed from my days I was with Masqueraders but the County Cups work like this.
The County Cup (Starkey Championship Cup) is awarded to the top scoring Feature or Tableaux. A second Cup (Midsomer Norton Championship Cup) is then awarded to the top scoring club in the opposite class. Both cup also count as the class winners trophy.
County points are award 5=1st, 4=2nd, 3=3rd, 2=4th and 1 point for each attending club not gaining points for that night.
I do think this is a fair way of scoring carnival and the competition element does push the clubs to produce more amazing entries each year.

Thanks Mat, but youre previous posting is another reason why the county cup is past its sell by date.
Masqueraders and Gremlins could pull out the best carts ever seen, but they are never in direct competition with Gemini (or any other tableau club for the that matter!)
Therefore, which ever club wins it will never have actually beaten the club that comes second.

To save all this arguing,isnt it time to scrap the overall county cup.
I can understand that back in the day, carts were very similar and on some people danced but on others people stood still. But times have changed and it is impossible to compare the awe-inspiring feature entries with the, sorry to say, rather stale tableau ones.
Thats no disrespect to tableau clubs, but the discipline peaked in the mid 90s with Huckyduck and Wills but has been going downhill ever since. Im not here to belittle tableau clubs but why compare them with feature? Do we need an overall champion?
