Can you tell me more about the judging at carnivals?
The judges are based along the route of the carnival and rate the different entries as they proceed. The entries are judged on a number of categories, and at the overall results are given at the end of the carnival, after all the judges have submitted their thoughts.

The judges rate the entries as follows:

  • Presentation, music and general effect
What impression does the entry have on the judge.

  • Lighting
It's all about quality not quantity. It's always great to see thousands of light bulbs all light up (and warm you up on a cold night), but how effective are they towards the float.

  • Costume and make-up/mask
What are the costumes like, do they compliment the float.

  • Either the movement or lack of, or the humorous content
This depends on the type of entry... Can the people remain motionless in the Tableau class; or in the Feature class, are everybody in sync, and is the dancing appropriate to the float. Is the general movement of the dancing technical. In the Comic class, it's based on how humorous the people are.

  • Float build-up
Is the float as a whole effective, does the quality of the build show and is the float technical with the moving parts and lighting.
